It is one of the many Tibetan medical thangkas that show medical illustrations. These educational tables were used as illustrations of a medical text ("The Four Tantras") that originated in the 9th century on the basis of Indian and Chinese sources. As a kind of illustrated encyclopedia, these pictures are still used in the traditional Tibetan medical education. The illustrations show an extensive spectrum of the medicine at that time.
